OK, so your relatives are in town, and you promised them a visit to Kartchner Caverns, but the tickets won't arrive for six months. Where to go? Well, what are the odds that they've toured a water recharge facility or a desert wetlands? Give them something cool for their postcard to home: sign up for a tour of Tucson Water projects that demonstrate how to protect our most precious resource: water. No More Drownings!
A record that no one wants to break may be set in metropolitan Tucson.
As of August 2, four children ages 5 and under have died as a result of drowning in the Tucson area. Nationwide, more than 350 children in this age group drown each year. Drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths in these children.
The sad thing is that drownings are preventable and could be virtually eliminated if parents and caregivers would follow some basic prevention tips:
- consistently supervise children in or around any body of water
- install a self-closing and self-latching gate to separate the pool from the house
- have a telephone at poolside to avoid leaving the pool area
The bottom line is that supervision is the best prevention against drownings. For more information, call the Tucson Fire Department Prevention Center at 791-4502 to receive "Designated Child Watcher Tags" and "Children Aren't Waterproof" brochures (available in English and Spanish).
