CAREER AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
The Tucson Fire Department offers numerous career/promotional and educational opportunities. After an initial two-year period, firefighters
may seek promotions in the fire suppression (Engineer), paramedical (Paramedic), or fire prevention (Fire Inspector) sectors. Training and education for these positions are provided by the Tucson Fire Department.
Once certification for any of these positions has been obtained, a firefighter is eligible to participate in the desired promotional process. Individuals may continue their education and go through similar
certification and promotional processes for positions such as Captain and Battalion Chief, after serving the required number of years in a lesser-ranked position (Engineer, Paramedic, or Fire Inspector). The
educational and certification programs necessary to qualify for advancement are available to all members on an equal basis.
Continuing education is also provided through the department to all members on a quarterly basis. In addition, the Tucson Fire Department
occasionally offers classes for members to become certified in areas such as Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, and others. Again all classes are provided at no cost to the employee and are an excellent resource
for increasing skills and knowledge.
The starting salaries (under the current, 2001-2002 compensation plan) for some of the promotional positions are listed below:
- Engineer: $54,832 per year
- Paramedic: $54,832 per year
- Inspector: $54,832 per year
- Captain: $63,568 per year
- Battalion Chief: $82,056 per year
