Tucson Fire Department

Welcome  to  the  Tucson   Fire  Department

AFTER THE ACADEMY

Most people are curious about what happens after a Recruit successfully completes our Training Academy. Upon graduation from the Academy, Tucson Fire cannot explicitly guarantee employment for each new Firefighter. However, it is our goal and intent to place each new firefighter at one of our 21 fire stations.

A firefighter’s probationary period continues until 18 months have been served. During this time, firefighters are required to successfully complete a series of written and practical exams as well as additional oral board interviews.

Probationary firefighters are full-time TFD employees, and therefore work our normal schedule. There are three (3) shifts, “A,” “B,” and “C.” While one shift is working, the other two are not. Firefighters work 24 hour shifts, with 24 hours off between each shift. After five (5) shifts have been completed (within a 9-day period), the firefighter gets six (6) consecutive days off.

Upon graduation of the Academy, a firefighter’s pay increases to $41,845 per year. Under our current pay scales, the rank of firefighter reaches its maximum of $54,832 per year, after 10 years of service.
