PREPARING FOR A CAREER
IN THE FIRE SERVICE
A career in the fire service - and with TFD - is physically, emotionally, mentally, and academically challenging. It requires
motivation, self-discipline and an exceptional person to be successful not only in the recruitment/application process, but also in a fire service career. The following are some suggestions on how to prepare for, or explore, a career in the fire service:
- Take classes at a local community college. Pima Community College in Tucson offers a number of Fire Science courses as well as an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) course
- If you are between the ages of 14 and 21, you are eligible to participate in our Cadet Program (click here for more information)
- Obtain information about volunteer positions at some of the fire departments in the Tucson area (TFD does not offer any volunteer opportunities)
- Work on becoming physically and mentally ready for a challenge! Click here for information on how to prepare for the CPAT (the physical agility test)
