Whenever a request or application is made for a burn permit within the City of Tucson the following guidelines will be followed. The flow chart found
below can be used for guidance.
A. Burn Permits
- A request or application for a burn permit must be submitted to the Tucson Fire Department Fire Prevention office ( 797 E. Ajo Way, Tucson, AZ 85713) any time a person or company intends to conduct open
burning within the City of Tucson. The application must be submitted to the Fire Prevention office no later than five (5) business days prior to the first date of the intended burn. This application must be made
in writing on the “Open Burning Permit Application” (available below). The burn permit application will be thoroughly reviewed and may be subject to denial. All the conditions that are outlined on the permit
application must be met for a permit to be considered for approval.
B. Issuance of Burn Permits
- A burn permit may be issued for either residential or commercial purposes. These permits are to be issued only for open burning activities within the limits of the City of Tucson. Any requests that are located
outside of the city limits shall be referred to the Pima County Department of Environmental Quality at 740-3340. There are activities where a permit will never be issued, as well as activities where a permit is
not required but some type of notification or restrictions to the activity will be imposed. See the Burn Permit Flowchart.
- Activities requiring a burn permit:
- Residential – Religious, ceremonial, pleasure, cooking, or warmth purposes (Total fuel area of greater than 3’ in diameter and greater than 2’ in height)
- Commercial – Air Curtain Destructor Use (Approved by PDEQ first)
- Commercial – Agricultural
- Commercial – Prescribed Burns
- Activities requiring restrictions and / or notification:
- Residential – Religious, ceremonial, pleasure, cooking, or warmth purposes (Total fuel area of 3’ or less in diameter and 2’ or less in height. Restrictions
outlined in the IFC Chapter 3)
- Commercial – Training (Notification to the Fire Prevention office)
- Activities where burning is not allowed under any circumstances
- Residential – Debris, waste, or cut vegetation removal
- Residential – Bonfires
- Commercial – Debris, waste, or cut vegetation removal
- Any burning involving “dangerous material” or “ hazardous waste”
- For any of the activities that require a burn permit, the burn permit application form shall be entirely completed and submitted to the Fire Prevention office no later than five (5) business days prior to the
first day of the intended burn. This application will then be reviewed by Fire Prevention personnel. This review will assure that the condition of the intended burn location allows for the open burning and that
the information submitted on the application is correct. Any issues found to be requiring modification will be brought to the attention of the permit applicant by the reviewing Fire Prevention personnel. If the
conditions of the site are inadequate or any of the required modifications are unable to be met, the burn permit is subject to denial.
C. Failure to comply
- Any open burning requiring a permit, that is found being conducted without a permit, shall be subject to the normal violation procedures utilized by the Fire Prevention office. Any open burning being done with a
valid burn permit, that is being done outside of the conditions of the permit shall be subject to the normal violation procedures utilized by the Fire prevention office and the burn permit approval shall be
withdrawn.
