Reports from ESRI Annual Conference
Leticia, Teri, Manny and others described their experiences at the ESRI Annual Conference in San Diego last week. Much of the conference was promoting ArcGIS 9.0 and related products. The paper sessions were generally panned as boring and unhelpful. The level of presentations was difficult to navigate, so that for some, the sessions were way over their heads, while for others, it was 'been there, done that.' A number of good personal contacts with other attendees were reported and some good material was obtained.
Manny Rosas described the GIS training funds PAG has acquired. He will be sending a training needs survey out soon, to help determine what training would be appropriate. Manny described some image processing software his group is working with. It is designed to highlight differences in multispectral imagery. Manny also mentioned that the delivery cycle for recent orthophotography has slowed, given problems with quality acceptance with the vendor.
Pima County - DOT/Tech Services/GIS
Steve Whitney mentioned the new storage network now in place for the MARS GIS Library server. Much more space is now available, allowing expansion of GIS data availability. Steve described the work he did with layers related to the recent Aspen Fire. He has placed some files onto MARS showing all the daily fire change updates. Steve's group has not yet started on the blending of City DOT's digitized street information with stnetall - expects to start soon.
Don Ijams described the 16 hour training he will be offering on ArcView 3.x starting July 17. He has 10 City employees lined up to take the class, some using the newly reallocated (from Water) ArcView software.
Don indicated that the GIS Intern replacement process was slow during June and early July due to vacations in City I.T. He will see what can be done to accelerate the process.
City Comprehensive Planning, working with Dave Koss (on loan from Real Estate), is working with the newly acquired CommunityViz ArcView extension. They are preparing a pilot project, focusing on eastern Downtown near the railroad depot and Martin Luther King, Jr apartments. They think the before and after flythroughs will be particularly helpful in visualizing alternative futures for that part of downtown.
Michael Liberti has produced a new ESRI MapObjects application for use in the Water Department. He is also working with ArcPad on a Compaq IPAC handheld with GPS. Chris Kelleher in DOT is working with an urban trails layer and PAG is doing some land use modeling.
