Tucson Fire Department Presentation

Deputy Chief Joe Gulotta presented an excellent overview of TFD's current mapping operations and applications, and some of their future needs and desires. This led to a discussion that concluded with the formation of a subcommittee to address this focus area. The consensus is that many of us posses and/or are in control of pieces to the puzzle, and we need to identify these pieces to see what we have already, and what we need to develop.

I will schedule the first meeting of this emergency response subcommittee within the next few weeks. So far, the following folks have signed on: Dave Hochede, COT IT; Dave Koss, TDOT/Real Estate; Blanca Espino, COT DSD; Francisco Leyva, TDOT/Traff. Eng.; Joe Jakoby, COT Ops; Ron Platt, TDOT; Teri Schultz, TFD; Bryn Enright, Water; Pablo Garcia, COT Clerk; Robin Smith, Water; Linda Lopez, Communications Data Svcs.; John Crosby, Communications Data Svcs; Larry Cassen, Env. Svcs.; Donald Ijams, TPD; Bob Czaja, Water; Bill Tanksley, TEP and Robert MacArthur, UofA. If you are interested in participating on this subcommittee, please contact Steve Whitney at steve.whitney@dot.pima.gov. If you know of folks who may be interested, please discuss this opportunity with them.

What's new in the GIS Library

Shapes_lat_lon, both in the GIS Library and on the ftp site (account required).

There is now a selected set of Library layers for which shapefiles in latitude / longitude coordinates are available. On the MARS server (Pima County GIS Library), they are located in \mars1\az\counties\pima\shapes_lat_lon. On the ftp server they are located in /gislib/az/counties/pima/shapes_lat_lon. This set of layers was selected based on E911 needs.

Electronic Plan Submittal (EPS) Subcommittee Report

The latest draft of proposed electronic plan submittal guidelines was distributed, and Steve has included them at the bottom of this document. So far, the following folks have signed on: Laura Pinnas, TEP; Karol Aragonze, CPTF; Jesse Reyes, CPTF; Jack Avis, Marana; Andrew Acuff, PC DSD; James Thornton, PC DOT.

We would like to get a good mix of GIS, and plan review folks involved in this subcommittee. If you are interested in participating on this subcommittee, please contact Laura Pinnas at LPinnas@TucsonElectric.Com. If you know of folks who may be interested, please discuss this opportunity with them.

Sensitive GIS Layers

This topic was brought up to get folks thinking about developing a mechanism by which sensitive GIS layers/databases can remain secure while remaining available for internal use. The emergency response subcommittee could address this, as it will surely become an issue for many of the detailed layers needed for that effort.

Open Floor

Orthophotos: The Pictometry products were discussed, and another demonstration will be presented at the April meeting. For more information, see Pictometry's web page.

Budget: I have received 2 budget requests to date. If there are any more, please get them to me by March 5th, so we review and get the procurement ball rolling.

Additional information from above: DRAFT Electronic Plan Submittal (EPS) Guidelines for Computer Aided Design (CAD) Drawings

  • The drawing should be in AutoCAD DWG or DGN format.
  • The base drawing should be submitted, not individual sheets. The CAD drawing should include the entire project area.
  • Each CAD layer should be assigned to a unique set of CAD features within the drawing. There must be no mixing of CAD features among the layers. (For example all lot lines should be on one layer, street centerlines another layer).
  • A CAD layer "Data Dictionary" should be provided explaining the layers or levels used for each feature in the drawing. The Data Dictionary may be a simple text file, Word Document, Excel spreadsheet, or email text and provided with the submitted drawing file.
  • If possible, all features should be exploded and not in blocks any special fonts should also be included.
  • The CAD drawing and/or any other related documents should be zipped into a single file.
  • If possible, the development boundary should be tied to a minimum of two Public Land Survey System (PLSS) Monuments and if the area is greater that 160 acres, it should be tied to four or more Public Land Survey Monuments.
  • The submission of Electronic Plan information doesn't preclude or circumvent any agencies development review process or requirements.
  • Email Submittals to: Subdivisions@dot.pima.gov
