GIS Cooperative Meeting Notes
City Information Technology Dept. Pueblo Room
Tuesday, September 21, 2004
GIS Cooperative Chairman Steve Whitney presiding.
Integrated Digital Technologies Presentation
Integrated Digital Technologies is a company that offers software to support electronic plan review with redlining/text capabilities. Emergency management services utilize the system for document archival and retrieval.
The City of Tucson Development Services Department uses their copy of the system for plan review. Compression technology (CPC View) enables quick display. The software is suitable for use with wi-fi wireless technology. The viewer is a browser plug-in, i.e. access is through a web browser. The City of Tucson Transportation Department has integrated the software package with their mapping systems.
The system handles multi-page documents as thumbnails and/or index pages. AutoCAD drawings would need to be converted to images, to support redlining (the user is responsible for conversion). Drawings could be archived in .dwg format though, so it would support native file retrieval outside of the system interface.
Security is multi-level covering various categories of user needs, and is fully configurable. Fees are $30 per month per gigabyte for storage. Subscription rates for bulk users, i.e. Development Services has paid for full public access to the system. The system has document tracking and version control, along with history data.
What's new in the GIS Library: STNETGDB - experiences to date
The Town of Marana has been using the re-engineered street layer (STNETGDB) with no problems to date. The XML schema transfer didn't work, and it was reported that it may not be specific to the street network, i.e. it may be a software glitch. Geocoding of E911 addresses indicate that approximately 6,000 addresses are missing address ranges, and a plan is being formulated to correct this.
Emergency Response Subcommittee
Tucson Community Technology Education Network
Efforts are underway with City High School to map building details, in support of the Tucson Fire Department. The County-City Public Works building was used as a pilot, and the Hotel Congress and Rialto Theater will be next.
Domain experts are being utilized to provide further GIS education and variety with the building mapping. If you are interested in presenting as a domain expert or volunteering to help supervise the kids as they map buildings, the class meets every Wednesday from 12:15 to 3:30 p.m. Please contact Steve Whitney at 740-6729, or steve.whitney at dot.pima.gov.
Electronic Plans Submission Subcommittee Report
Next meeting is Tuesday, October 12th at 2:30 p.m. in basement conference room B at the Public Works Building. City of Tucson Development Services will demonstrate their electronic plan system, as mentioned Item 1 above.
Geospatial Organization Initiative Report
The Arizona Professional Land Surveyors (APLS) Geospatial subcommittee has finalized the application form and process for the membership status of Geospatial Professional, and the package has been submitted to the APLS Board. Packets will be available at the Arizona Geographic Information Council conference. The application review process is being developed, and should be complete in November. Once the application process is in place, efforts will begin to increase participation from the GIS, photogrammetry, geodesy, etc. A round-table discussion will take place at the AGIC conference on Thursday, October 28th at 1:30 p.m.
Pima Association of Governments Orthophoto Project of 2005
The coverage area and product type specifications are being finalized for the RFP release. At this time, the anticipated aerial photography project includes approximately 2,000 square miles of coverage, and will be a mix of color imagery at different base resolutions, including 1/2 foot. It is hoped that Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology will be used to generate an updated Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for the metropolitan area. The towns of Ajo and Sells will be flown, as well as some of the Interstate 10 corridor into Cochise County.
