Help with Java Runtime Plug-In

Downloading the Java Runtime Environment Plug-In

When you click on a water quality zone, or zoom in and click on a sampling point or well (point of entry, or poe), you are presented with a table listing the various analytes for which data is available. (see Figure 1)

Clicking on one of these analyte names should present you with a line or bar graph.  (see Figure 2)

Some people have encountered difficulties viewing the graphs -- they may either be presented with a blank graph (see Figure 3), or no graph at all.

If you experience this difficulty, you may need to visit the Sun website and download the free Java Plug-In. The instructions for downloading and installing this plug-in are described below. Please review these instructions throroughly before visiting the Sun website, to make sure that you obtain the correct plug-in.

The plug-in is available from the following link:

Your screen should resemble Figure 4. From this screen, select “Download J2SETM v1.4.1_03 Now!” (we have placed an arrow on the screen, which points to where we have drawn a circle around the link you need to follow)

The next screen presents you with a multitude of options. We are assuming that you are using one of the various versions of Microsoft Windows. What you are looking for is the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE), Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Click on the “DOWNLOAD” link (Figure 5).

If you desire, you may choose to join the Sun Developer Network; if so, read this page, fill out the form, and proceed. If not, you may simply click “No thank you, continue” (Figure 6.)

You will now be presented with the terms of the license (Figure 7). You will need to scroll down to read all of the terms of the agreement.

In order to proceed, you must accept the terms of the License agreement (Figure 8).

You're almost done! Click on the filename of the file you are downloading (Figure 9).

You have the choice of saving the file, or opening it from its current location. In this particular instance, we recommend you select “Open” (Figure 10).

You should now see a progress meter as the file opens, or downloads (Figure 11). The amount of time this requires will vary depending on the speed of your connection.

If all went well, you should now see the “InstallShield Wizard” with a progress meter for the extraction of the various components (Figure 12).

When the package extraction process has completed, you will be presented with the License Agreement screen (Figure 13). After you have read the agreement, click “Yes” to continue.

Select “Typical” (the default) for the type of setup, then click “Next” (Figure 14).

You will be presented with one more progress meter screen as the various components are installed (Figure 15). When this process has completed, you're done!  Restart your browser, and try the graph display again.
